Alliance & Leicester's education programme

As one of the largest employers in Leicestershire and Merseyside, we recognise that we have an important role to play in our local communities.

As well as supporting the National Gallery's Take One Picture website, our education programme supports a variety of activities at all ages for both teachers and pupils, including:

  • Our support for Lighthouse Learning was the original foundation of our education in Leicester which is helping to improve schools in disadvantaged areas across Leicester.

  • We have supported teachers through the Hamilton Trust 'Save Our Sundays' Campaign, which provides newly qualified primary school teachers with lesson plans for maths and English.

  • We believe it is important that children get a good balanced education, as well as assisting in improving academic skills, we also provide support for the Leicester Tiger's TAG rugby programme.

  • The Group has provided two secondary schools with £50,000 donations enabling them to obtain specialist school status from the Government. Soar Valley College in Leicester gained specialist status in Maths and Computing in October 2004, and St. Saviours High School in Bootle gained specialist status in Business and Enterprise in February 2006. We are working with both schools to help develop and implement a series of initiatives aimed at further improving the quality and variety of educational activities available.

  • To actively help improve financial literacy and to support the Citizenship element of the National Curriculum, we developed the www.mymoneymatters.info website. This is aimed at teaching students how to manage their money.

  • We support the National Forest's education programme at its Conkers visitor centre in Ashby, Leicestershire.

Staff involvement:

We actively encourage and support our staff to volunteer:
  • More than 60 of our staff are school Governors.

  • Over 150 staff spend an hour each week to help children to improve their reading and numeracy through the Right to Read, Number Partners and Liverpool Compact schemes.

  • We are members of Business in the Community and Leicestershire, Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds Cares. You can read more about our work in the community in our CR Report at www.alliance-leicester-group.co.uk
