Take One Picture: An Exhibition of Work by Primary Schools
Inspired by Jan Molenaer's 'Two Boys and a Girl Making
Music', 1629
Between September 2005 and October 2006 many hundreds
of primary schools from across the UK used 'Two
Boys and a Girl Making Music' by Jan Molenaer as
a stimulus for learning across the curriculum.
Some teachers found out about the painting during one
of the Gallery's regular Continuing
Professional Development courses, or downloaded
the free resources from the Take One Picture website.
Take One Picture encourages pupils and teachers to learn
together, setting their own lines of enquiry inspired
by a painting. The high standard and breadth of the
work shown in this exhibition, together with the comments
from teachers, provides clear evidence that focusing
learning around a visual stimulus makes for exciting,
inclusive and personalised education.
Counting formal submissions only, over 43,000 children,
teachers and wider members of the school communities,
including parents, non-teaching staff and governors,
participated in the scheme during the last academic
year alone.
Take One Picture aligns closely with the DCSF
Primary National Strategy: Excellence and Enjoyment
and the principles of Personalised
Learning.
Seven schools have been selected to demonstrate the
wide range of skills, knowledge and understanding that
can be gained from taking just one picture as a starting
point for teaching and learning, however, it is no exaggeration
that the whole of the National Gallery could easily
be filled with children's work inspired by 'Two Boys
and a Girl Making Music'.
