Counting buttons

Wentworth CE Junior and Infant School

Year 1 and 2 children (five- to seven-year-olds) produced six matching buttons from clay after counting the ones on the boy’s jacket in Molenaer's painting. They followed the ceramic process of firing, glazing and then firing again, helping them to understand that materials change when treated in different ways. The pupils then used their own buttons as counters in Maths lessons.
